Consider a card's possible value in relation to your hand and your opponents' hands when deciding whether to discard or hold onto it. Let go of a card if you have several options for melding but it doesn't seem like it will make a significant contribution. On the other hand, holding onto a card you've drawn could keep your opponent from succeeding if you believe they are about to finish their hand with it.
